The Charvak Mandal is a platform for the College Staff and Students to discuss issues related to academic and social relevance. The Mandal arranges lectures and discussions that are aimed at provoking new thinking or changing mindsets.
In 2016-17, the Mandal organised two lectures.
· In the first, organised jointly with the Department of Sociology on September 2, 2016, Mr. YuvrajMohite spoke on ‘Social Unity’, as part of the SamajikEkyaPandharvada, to the celebrate the birth anniversary of the Late Prime Minister Shri. Rajiv Gandhi.
· On January 20, 2017, the Charvak Mandal and College Counselling Cell jointly organized an audio-visual presentation on ‘Inculcating Reading Culture’. A documentary, Books in the Big City, was screened. It showed various book lovers sharing the story of their love for books and also some prominent book stores, book sellers and libraries.
The documentary was followed by a presentation, titled The Tale of a Book Dragon, by Dr. Gautami Ambiye,Assistant Professor, Department of English, and an avid reader. She regaled the audience with interesting anecdotes of her experiences as a reader and how reading shaped her personality.
The programme was a part of the series of similar such programmesorganised previously by the Departments of Marathi and Hindi, aimed at inculcating reading habits among students and providing them with a platform to express their linguistic skills.
The programme was attended by Principal Dr. SharmishthaMatkar, who thoroughly enjoyed it and also took part in the interaction that followed. Members of the Staff and Students had a very lively discussion, with many sharing their experiences as readers and others declaring their resolution to read regularly.
