Raves '08 : Our journey Through The Junkyard |
|
Our College festival Raves, has always been a special part of the lives of all Patkarites, both those studying in the College as well as those who have graduated. The spirit of ‘Raves’ continues to fill all hearts.
In 2008, Raves was organised against the backdrop of the November terrorist attacks on various locations in South Mumbai. Though not in a celebratory mood, the festival had been planned earlier, and putting it off would only mean letting the terrorists win in their attempt to cow the people of Mumbai. Hence, Raves took off as planned.
Each year, Raves centres around a unique theme and this year’s theme was ‘Junkyard’. Our creative team, headed by Ashish More and Nakul Kadam, got to work immediately. They gathered broken-down car parts, discarded tires, pieces of glass, used cans, and much else that one normally finds in a junkyard. Working late hours, the team recreated a junkyard in the College campus. The success of their creativity was seen in the awestruck look on the face of every visitor to the festival.
Also, to capture the essence of our theme and to draw attention to it, the Raves brochure was packaged in jute bags (gonis) specially made by our students. Each page of every brochure was crumpled to give it the feel of waste paper (raddi). Every event was named in keeping with the Festival’s theme — such as, Ad-making was dubbed ‘Brand Junkie’, Quiz was ‘Intellectual Junk’, Solo Singing was ‘Junk-E-Elaan’, Aggressive Chess was ‘Rusty Rage’, Personality Contest was ‘Mr. and Miss Junkyard’, and so on. Even the committee and volunteers of Raves ’08 were referred to as the ‘tool box’ and were linked to tools according to the teams and tool’s function: Chairperson — Hammer, VCPs — Nuts, HODs — Bolts, Security — Nails, Volunteers — Spanners, and a few of the members even sported blue overalls resembling that of mechanics!
The actual days of the Festival were a time of fun and nervousness for all involved in the organisation of the Festival. Over 25 Colleges sent their entries. One College from Pune also sent entries! So great was the response that the registration counters had barely started work before they had to ask for extra volunteers to speed up the work! Within 15 minutes all events were booked to capacity!
During the evening, which is the time for special attractions, video clips made by our students especially for each event were played on the large screen placed on the stage. These introductory clips had the audience in pears of laughter.
Many celebrities looked in on the event. The Inauguration was attended by Saru Maini (of the ‘Shake It Shake It’ fame), Ajay Maurya, Jitendra Joshi, Sunil Barve, Ace and group (Best Rappers in Mumbai), Rajkumar Kanojia, Abhishek Avasthi, I. Lakdawala (model), Silveyster (Nach Baliye), Rahul Vashi and others. The event was also graced by Shri. Subhash Desai (M.L.A.), Shri. Dilip Salaskar (Brother of Late Shri. Vijay Salaskar) Shri. D. G. Wagle (Member, Chikitsak Samuha), Dr. Suman Pawar (Executive Director, Chikitsak Samuha), Nitesh Jaiswal, Ajay Vichare, Dilip Shinde and Sunil Paradkar. Some ex-students who had formerly been members of the Cultural Department — Paulomi Ray, Nadeem Desai, Amit Sawant — also looked in on the Festival.
Raves '08 was organised by a team that was largely new to the dynamics of organising and hosting such a large event. Yet, the success of the Festival was solely due to their tireless efforts and spirit.
It goes without saying that without the support of Chikitsak Samuha, Principal Dr. Uday Mashelkar and the sponsors, the organisation of this Festival would not be possible. This is also a good time to thank the able organising team, every volunteer, and everyone who contributed even a nut or a bolt or even a safety pin for that matter to Raves '08. The grand success would not have been possible without them.
