On June 29, 2019, the Department of English organised a workshop on “Who is In? Who is Out? A Perspective on Inclusion, Social Justice and Exclusion”. The speaker was Mr. Mushtaq Shaikh, Research Associate at CEIAR, TISS and an Alumnus of the Department.
The session started with an activity conducted to get responses from the participants regarding the meaning of inclusion and exclusion and the various forms that they take in our daily life.
Mr. Shaikh emphasized the complex, multidimensional, relational, dynamic and context-dependent nature of inclusion and exclusion. He further elaborated on their four main dimensions – Economic, Social, Political and Cultural — giving examples of how exclusion operates on the basis of gender, physical and mental disability, religion, caste, body type, in the fields of academics, work places and all other institutional levels. He also spoke about the attitudinal changes and approaches required to voice as well as promote right kind of inclusion.
The session was followed by a discussion andthe Students expressed their opinions about the topic and gave their written feedback.
