The Departments of Microbiology and Biotechnology jointly organised the following online events:
• A two-day State-level Webinar on “Advanced Biology Techniques” was organised on June 24and 25, 2020, in association with Logical Biology. The resource person was Dr. Nishant Vyas, Research Director, Nirav Biosolutions, Pvt. Ltd., Pune, and Founder of Logical Biology.
On Day 1, Dr. Vyas introduced the topic with basic details on flow cytometry, its instrumentation, working,and the various applications. The session was then followed by a short quiz for participants. On Day 2, Dr. Vyas discussed cell culture, especially mammalian cell culturing. He went on to discuss related concepts using a detailed example of T cell culturing. This was followed by an explanation of real time PCR technique used for gene expression analysis and the result interpretation of the tests. The webinar ended with a discussion of participants’ doubts.
The Webinar was attended by 306 participants, including 70 teachers, 28 Research scholars and 208 students.
• On July 5, 2020, a discussion and talk on “Career in Food Technology” was organised, and which was attended by 80 participants, including 4 Teachers and 76 Students of the Departments. The speakers were Department Alumni and food industry professionals: Ms. Hemangi Rane, Food Technologist and Microbiology Laboratory Technician, Fonterra, Christchurch, New Zealand;Ms. Reema Pandhre, Food Export Analyst, Intertek India Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai; and Mr. Ravi Kuril, QA and Hygiene Executive, Travels Food Services Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai. They spoke on the scope, eligibility, current situation and future trends in the field of food technology. The discussion was followed by an interactive session.
• On July 6, 2020, to commemorate World Zoonoses Day, an “Awareness Awareness Drive on World Zoonoses Day – An emerging and re-emerging Zoonotic diseases of Public Health interest” was organised, in which PG Students of the Departments addressed the UG Students. The speakers made presentations on the history, causative agents, modes of transmission, treatment, prevention, and on-going research on Zoonotic diseases. The presentations were followed by an interactive session. The Webinar was especially relevant in the current COVID-19 situation, and was attended by 115 participants, including 4 Teachers and 111 Students.
