On September 26, 2016, the Department of Biotechnology organised a one-day lab visit to the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Versova, Andheri, for 19 of its M.Sc. Part II students. They were accompanied by faculty member Ms. Pallavi Ghogale.
The group was received by Dr. Abhay Phulke, Scientist, Microbiology Department at NIO., and was given an overview of the Institute and its research. They were then taken to visit the Microbiology Lab where they were shown such instruments as Incubator and LAF. Dr. Phulke spoke to students about the ongoing research in the Lab.
The group also visited other labs such as the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, COD Wetlab, a sample digestion lab (where elements such as mercury, heavy metals and lead are digested), the Petroleum Hydrocarbon Laboratory and Total Organic Carbon Laboratory (where hydrocarbons are detected), Benthic Ecology lab, Phytoplankton lab and Zooplankton lab. They were explained the processes of sample collection from oceans and isolation. In addition, the group was taken to visit such departments as CFTIR and SAN++ where food products are designed and nutritionally enhanced.
Students found the visit to be highly beneficial.
