On September 3, 2016, the Department of Biotechnology arranged a visit to the ATC lab at the National Facility for Biopharmaceuticals (NFB), G.N.Khalsa College, Matunga. The visit was attended by 19 MSc-II Biotechnology students who were accompanied by faculty member Ms. Karishma Savardekar. The group was met by NFB In-charge Ms. Pratiksha Alag, andInstructors Ms. Shalmali Pendase and Mr. Vikas Jha.
Ms. Pendase spoke to the students about ‘Mammalian Tissue Culture Technique’. She explained the concept of tissue culture and its various applications and scope in research. Following this session the group was divided into two batches and these batches visited the labs and observed ATC practicals in turns.
During the lab visits, students observed Monolayer culture, a fermenter for animal cell, and were shown how to get Monolayer culture, and learnt about Cytotoxicity using MTT assay. ELISA plate reader was also demonstrated.
The groups also visited other departments such as Molecular Biology, Proteomics, Microbiology (Bioprocess) of NFB, where they learnt about the various instruments used there and the type of projects undertaken there.
