The Department of Microbiology conducted a number of visits for its students in August and September.

The following is a brief report:

On August 27, 2015, 34 SY students were taken to visit Versova Pumping station and Versova lagoon. The students were accompanied by Co-ordinator Dr. Nayana Chandak. Students were shown the treatment process for the sewage water from the beginning to the final step. They benefited greatly from the visit.

The Department of Microbiology conducted a number of visits for its students in August and September.

On August 27, 2015, 34 SY students were taken to visit Versova Pumping station and Versova lagoon. The students were accompanied by Co-ordinator Dr. Nayana Chandak. Students were shown the treatment process for the sewage water from the beginning to the final step. They benefited greatly from the visit.

  • On September 2 and 3, 2015, FY students were taken in batches to visit SRL Laboratory. The 34 students were accompanied by faculty members Dr. Nayana Chandak, Ms. Yuganka Jadhav, and Ms. Jerrina Pinto. The students were shown the latest instruments available in Laboratory, and also the following processes:
    •  Sample collection and Documentation
    • Sample labeling and processing
    • Various techniques used for analysis of clinical samples
    • Histological specimen processing
    • Observation of a stained slide of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    The SRL lab has also shown the interest in collaborating with the College to provide internships to students.

On September 4, 2015, an excursion was arranged for 62 FY students of the Departments of Biotechnology and Microbiology to BNHS, Goregaon, Mumbai. The students were accompanied by four faculty members: Ms. Purva Prabhu, Ms. Saima Shaikh, Ms. Jerina Pinto and Ms. Neha Ahire.

The group were met by resource persons Ms. Amandeep Kaur, Ms. Isha and Ms. Vidhya. The students were divided into 3 groups and taken on a nature trail, where they observed the fauna of the area, and also visited the butterfly garden. This was followed by a lecture on ‘Biodiversity’, which discussed biodiversity in the forests of Mumbai. Students were also imparted the basic skills on how to survive in a forest, and the skills required for research in this field.
