On August 28, 2015, the Department of Biotechnology organised a one-day lab visit to the National Facility for Biopharmaceuticals (NFB), G.N.Khalsa College Matunga, Mumbai, for 14 of its M. Sc. Part II students.
At NFB, the students were met by Ms. Pratiksha Alag, In-charge, NFB, and Mr. Avinash Kharat, Research Scholar, NFB, who were also the research persons. After the general welcome by Ms. Alagh, Mr. Kharat gave them information about the instrumentation required for use in the ATC lab. Following this, students were taken to visit four labs at NFB:
- Molecular Biology department – where the instruments displayed were RT PCR, flow cytrometry, laminar air flow, ELISA Reader
- Protein purification department – where the instruments displayed were FPLC (fast performance liquid chromatography), Nano blot, Lyophilizer, UV visible spectroscopy, Infrared-spectroscopy
- Utility area – where the instruments displayed were PAGE, autoclave, fermenter, double distillatory
- ATC Lab – CO2 incubator, inverted microscope, biosafety cabinet II, cryopreservation liquid N2), Ultracentrifuge, bioreactor for suspended cells, fluorescent microscopy
The monolayer formation using chick embryo fibroblast and MTT assay practical were also demonstrated in ATC lab.
Students greatly benefited from the visit.
