On March 16, 2015, a one-day visit to Central Institute for Fisheries Education (CIFE), Andheri, Mumbai, was organized by the Department of Biotechnology for M.Sc. Biotechnology (Part I) students for the demonstration of PCR. A total of 14 students were accompanied by a teacher, Ms. Priti Parikh.
CIFE is the premier institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. It is a Deemed University and has contributed immensely to the development of the fisheries sector through its frontline research, teaching and extension activities.
The group was first taken to the Fisheries Resources, Harvest and Post Harvest Division, headed by Dr. Nayak. Arrangements were made in a classroom and one of the scientists from the Division, Dr. Sanath Kumar, delivered a one-hour lecture on PCR and its practical aspects.
The students were then taken to the lab and given a demonstration of PCR. Other major instruments were also shown. Students also visited the Aquatic Environment Management Division and were shown instruments like AAS and DGGE.
Students also got the opportunity to visit the new campus. They were taken to the library and the newly-established aquarium and wet lab facility.
Overall, it was a great experience for the students. It helped them to gain a better understanding of various instruments and the general working of a research lab.
