On January 16, 2017, the Department of BAF organised ‘Accounting Treasure’, as part of the event Accounting Club: The Tally House. Thirty students, from the Departments of BAF, BMS and BBI, divided into 15 teams of two students each, participated in the events across the following three levels:

There was great enthusiasm and friendly rivalry among the teams. The event was ably conducted by the Department faculty members Ms. Zeba Khan, Ms. Jyoti Langote, and Ms. Riddhi Guruji
• On July 15, 2016 — Accounting Club : The Tally House — an event for ‘Accounting Code-Decode’ was conducted for students of the Department. Fifty teams of 3 students each participated, and over 4 rounds, three teams emerged as the winners.
• On July 29, 2016 --- an accounting quiz — Accounting Club : The Tally House — was conducted for the students of the Departments of BAF, BBI and BMS. Thirty-six students participated, divided into 18 teams, with two participants in each team. Over three rounds, five teams remained after elimination on the basis of their score, of which 3 won.
• On August 31, 2016, an event titled ‘Corporate Issues’ was conducted for the students of the Departments of BAF, BMS and BBI. There were competitive activities at each level, and the participants progressed to each higher level on the basis of their performance. Of the original 9 teams (comprising two students each), two teams won the final round and were placed in first and second positions.
• On September 3, 2016, 4 FY students of the Department participated in an intercollegiate quiz competition titled ‘Quizards 2016’, organised by Sathaye College.
On January 14, 2017,SY students of Psychology, along with a few students from other Departments, visited Desire – an orphanage that serves orphan and abandoned children, some of whom are HIV-positive.
As it was Makar Sankrantiit was decided to spend some time with these children and spread cheer. Students and faculty members carried goody bags containing eatables, groceries and toiletries for the inmates. Games like ‘Fire-on-the-mountain’ and ‘Tug-of-war’ were played amidst laughter and frolic. Senior girl inmates were counselled regarding higher education.
It was truly a heart-warming experience and a small contribution of the Department towards Institutional Social Responsibility.
The College Self-Financed Departments celebrated Festival Week between December 13 and 17, 2016, during which the various inter-collegiate fests organised by these Departments were held.

Department of BMS – ALTIS – December 13, 2016
Nearly 26 colleges participated in this fest, which featured games such as MAD ADS, Money Multiplier, Mock Stock, Treasure Hunt, Live X and 0, and various engagement games.
There was maximum participation in Talent Hunt, where the participants gave spirited performances in such events as dance, singing, percussion, and mimicry.
The trophy for the First Position was won by Tolani College, Andheri, and the Second Position was secured by Thakur College.
Departments of IT and CS – IGNITE – December 14, 2016
Talegaon, Pune, was organised for 66 FY students. Mr. Sachin Bhagat and Dr. Anil Bhalerao accompanied the students.
The group also visited A1 Biotech Nursery where Dr. Dilip Jadhav, Director, explained different ornamental plants and techniques of gardening and spoke of the nursery business as an excellent career opportunity.

This year the theme of the event was a tribute to the Indian Defence services andthe chief guest of the event was Grp. Capt. Vijay Maheshwari.
There were various events such as Creative Mashup,Mind Teaser,Express to Impress,Spin-a-Luck and Diffusal Squad.
Departments of B.A.F. and B.B.I – PRAGOTSAV – December 16, 2016
On December 16, 2016, a one-day inter-collegiate fest, PRAGYOTSAV-16, was held. A variety of Management, Fine Arts, Cultural and Gaming events were organised as part of the fest.
Approximately 420 students from 18 colleges participated, and the Best College Award was bagged by Kandivali Education Society’s Shroff college, Kandivali (W).
The fest featured eventsrelated to categories such as Management, Fine Arts, Cultural and Gaming.Nearly 375 students participated in events such as Food Fest, Foxy Trait, and Kheech Meri Photo.

Department of Mass Media – MEDIATAINMENT– December 17, 2016
Students from around 28 colleges from Mumbai participated in the various events of the festival. There were more than 10 competitions in various categories such as drama, singing, board games and outdoor games. Eminent personalities from the media industries such as Umesh Jadhav, Sanjay Jadhav, Vinod Singh, Aarushi Mehta, and Raina Lahiri were judges for the various competitions.
On December 15, 2016, the Physics Association organised a one-day study tour to Nehru Science Centre for its students, which was attended by 56 students and 2 Department faculty members.
The visit was organised to help students understand the concepts of Physics in a fun way. The Nehru Science Centre has more than 500 interactive science exhibits on energy, sound, kinematics, mechanics, transport, etc., installed in the Science Park & different galleries, and there are several permanent science expositions on various themes.
Students were really excited to see the exhibits and benefited greatly from the visit.
Between October 1 and 8, 2016, M. A. D. had undertaken the beautification project of 36 railway stations in a project called ‘Hamara Station Hamari Shaan’. In all 483 students from IT,CS,BAF,BBI,BMS,BMM,Microbology,Biotechonology department, had participated in the same & contributed their efforts for the beautification of Goregaon railway station.
There were three categories in which students were divided:
Group 1: Creative team : The students from this group painted the stairs using their own creativity.
Group 2: Volunteers: Students from this team were mainly managing the crowd at the station so that the creative team can paint the stairs.
Group 3: Logistic Management : This team was mainly told to help the creative team by providing the things needed for painting work.
The students worked with great enthusiasm.
On September 26, 2016, the Department of Biotechnology organised a one-day lab visit to the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Versova, Andheri, for 19 of its M.Sc. Part II students. They were accompanied by faculty member Ms. Pallavi Ghogale.
The group was received by Dr. Abhay Phulke, Scientist, Microbiology Department at NIO., and was given an overview of the Institute and its research. They were then taken to visit the Microbiology Lab where they were shown such instruments as Incubator and LAF. Dr. Phulke spoke to students about the ongoing research in the Lab.
The group also visited other labs such as the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, COD Wetlab, a sample digestion lab (where elements such as mercury, heavy metals and lead are digested), the Petroleum Hydrocarbon Laboratory and Total Organic Carbon Laboratory (where hydrocarbons are detected), Benthic Ecology lab, Phytoplankton lab and Zooplankton lab. They were explained the processes of sample collection from oceans and isolation. In addition, the group was taken to visit such departments as CFTIR and SAN++ where food products are designed and nutritionally enhanced.
Students found the visit to be highly beneficial.
On September 24, 2016, the PG Departments of IT and CS organised an technical seminar in the series titled ‘KNOW-IT’. It was attended by 129 PG students, and 16 members of the Student Organising Committee. Over three sessions, the speakers spoke to the participants about the various aspects of IT and applied fields.
In the first session, Mr. Sanjeev Kamat, CIO, TJSB Bank, spoke on ‘Virtualization and Cloud Computing’. Mr. Kamat has 34 years of experience in data centre setup and its management, and explained these technical terms and their applications.
In the second session, Mr.Shakti Sharma, Research scholar, IITB, discussed ‘Advanced Image Processing: Satellite Imaging Prospective’. He explained the basic terminology of image processing, the techniques used in advanced image processing, and also shared his research experience on satellite image processing algorithms.
The third session was conducted by Mr. Devesh Rajadhyax, Founder and CEO, Cere Labs, who spoke on ‘Advanced Artificial Intelligence’. Mr. Rajadhyax has 30 years of experience in this field, and he discussed concepts with reference to case-studies which implemented artificial intelligence in an industry paradigm. He also discussed the availability of good projects and internships in this field. Students greatly benefited from this seminar.
On September 17, 2016, the Department of Information Technology (IT) organised a one-day event titled ‘TechTalks’ for its students.
TechTalks consisted of various events such as guest lecture, students’ presentations (on the topic ‘Rooting’), technical debate, and competitions that involved testing the participants’ knowledge of IT and logical capabilities through events such as ‘Don’t Miss the Clue’, ‘E-ideatic Memory’, ‘Crack it’ and ‘Bolt’.
Mr. Snehal Dhruve, CEO and founder, Superfan.ai, was invited to speak to students about ‘Artificial Intelligence’. Mr. Dhruve spoke about Chat Bots, and how they can be used as a Fan Management tool. He explained how Artificial Intelligence can help in creating an efficient relation between fans and celebrities using these Bots. Mr. Dhruve also discussed how they implemented Chat Bots for movies like ‘FLYING JAAT’ and ‘FREAKY ALI’, and the concept of Natural Language Processing.
The students of the Department participated enthusiastically in the events and also learnt a lot.
On September 3, 2016, the Department of Biotechnology arranged a visit to the ATC lab at the National Facility for Biopharmaceuticals (NFB), G.N.Khalsa College, Matunga. The visit was attended by 19 MSc-II Biotechnology students who were accompanied by faculty member Ms. Karishma Savardekar. The group was met by NFB In-charge Ms. Pratiksha Alag, andInstructors Ms. Shalmali Pendase and Mr. Vikas Jha.
Ms. Pendase spoke to the students about ‘Mammalian Tissue Culture Technique’. She explained the concept of tissue culture and its various applications and scope in research. Following this session the group was divided into two batches and these batches visited the labs and observed ATC practicals in turns.
During the lab visits, students observed Monolayer culture, a fermenter for animal cell, and were shown how to get Monolayer culture, and learnt about Cytotoxicity using MTT assay. ELISA plate reader was also demonstrated.
The groups also visited other departments such as Molecular Biology, Proteomics, Microbiology (Bioprocess) of NFB, where they learnt about the various instruments used there and the type of projects undertaken there.
On August 31, 2016, a theme-based lecture-cum-slide show was organised by Nature Club on ‘Solid Waste Management’. The speaker was Microbiologist Mr. Jayant Joshi.
Mr. Joshi discussed the various types of solid waste produced in Mumbai on a daily basis. He then went on to demonstrate an excellent method of organic waste disposal using specific low cost bacteria in plastic baskets, and which is easy to implement. He explained that the method is not only cost effective but also simple, and without any foul smell that is commonly generated in other methods of disposal. These baskets are highly cost-effective, very low-maintenance, and easy to use. They are available in different capacities and can be installed n our kitchens, restaurants, canteens and food points.
The lecture was attended by FY and SY students of Botany, Zoology Chemistry and Physics, their feedback was excellent.
On August 30, 2016, the College Cell for Prevention of Sexual Harassment organised a street play competition to raise awareness about the ‘Increasing Problems of Women’.
Forty-one students participated in this Competition. The students were divided into five groups: Rose, Sunflower, Marigold, Lotus, and Jasmine. Through the street plays, students portrayed the various problems, such as eve teasing and sexual harassment, that women face regularly.

The Competition was judged by Mrs. Uma Nabar (Head, Department of Sociology), Mr. R. Deogadkar (Head, Department of Marathi), and Dr. Gautam Sonkamble (Head, Department of Hindi).
The Inaugural Function of College Women Development Cell was held on Monday, August 29, 2016.
Mr. Aadesh Chavan, from Yuvaa Aadhar, a city-based NGO, was the Chief Guest for this function. It was also attended by Vice Principal Mr. N. D. Kumbhar.
The function began with Dr. Sandhya Parvate, a senior member of CWDC, introducing the Cell and stating its objectives. She also presented the report of CWDC for the academic year 2015-16.
After the felicitation of the guests, Mrs. Deepti Mujumdar, convener of CWDC, spoke about the CSR programme of ICICI group. The ICICI Academy for Skill Development is offering free 3-months courses under two categories: 1) Technical 2) Office Management. CWDC has taken up the registration of the students of our College for these courses, which commence from September 24, 2016.
Mr. Deorao Kapase, Sports Specialist from our College, is also a member of CWDC. He has been selected to represent India in the 5th Beach Asian Games to be held in Vietnam in September 2016. He was also felicitated on this occasion.
This was followed by a presentation and interactive session on ‘Teenage Relationships’. This presentation was based on scientific research conducted by various Universities across the world. The presentation discussed the meaning of teenage relationships, reasons for entering such relationships, success rate, reasons for failure and its impact on the teens, especially girls. It also discussed the support system for such teens at individual- and at college-level.
The presentation was followed by questions from the audience, where the male students got an opportunity to discuss even their perspective on the issue.
Over all, students greatly benefited by the presentation and gave a positive feedback about the programme
On August 24, 2016, the Department of Hindi organised a One-day Workshop for the FYBA Revised Syllabui in Hindi for the subjects of Hindi (Compulsory) and Hindi (Optional). The Workshop was organised in association with the University of Mumbai.
The Workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Vishnu Saravde, Chairperson, Board of Studies in Hindi, and Head, Department of Hindi, University of Mumbai. The Chief Guest for the Inauguration was Dr. Vitthal Bhalerao, Head, Department of Hindi, Savitribai Phule University. The function was presided over by Principal Dr. Sharmishtha Matkar.
The Chief Guest for the Valedictory Session was Dr. Karunashankar Upadhyay, former Head, Department of Hindi, University of Mumbai.

On August 20, 2016, the Marathi Vangmay Mandal of the College invited Mr. Bharat Ganeshpure, who features in the Zee Marathi show Chala Hawa Yeu Dya.
Ms. Sheetal Gamre and Mr. Akshay Bibvekar, students of the Department of Marathi, conducted an informal interview with Mr. Ganeshpure. They asked him numerous questions about his career, his journey from Amravati to the Mumbai acting industry and experiences therein, the show which brought him fame and made him a household name, and on his style of acting. Mr. Deogadkar, Head, Department of Marathi, also asked him several questions on his use of Varhadi Marathi, a dialect of Marathi spoken in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
Mr. Ganeshpure answered all these questions and more in his special Varhadi style. Through his responses, one sensed his down-to-earth personality. Success has not made him lose touch with his roots and this is what compels respect in his audience. The audience, which comprised students and staff, were held enthralled.
Students expressed their admiration for Mr. Ganeshpure by presenting him with a handmade greeting card (made by FYBA Marathi students Ms. Devika Shinde and Ms. Krutika Joshi) and reading out a poem composed for him by Department student Ms. Disha Sawant.
On August 20, 2016, the Department of Sanskrit celebrated Sanskrit Day.
On the occasion, students were invited to speak on the topic "माझ्या मनातील "देवा"ची संकल्पना” (“My Thoughts on the Concept of ‘God’”).
A number of students took the opportunity to air their views, both for and against, about the concept and existence of ‘God’. They proved false the common assumption that students do not think about such abstractions. On the contrary, they spoke fluently on the topic and their content was engaging and thought-provoking.
At the end of the session, there was a positive feedback from the audience and participants.
On Thursday, July 28, 2016, the Department of Psychology welcomed First Year students of the Department. Students of FY and SY introduced each other, thus forging friendships amongst them. This was followed by a few indoor games.
Along with fun, the program also oriented the FY students of Psychology to the syllabus and the preparations required to clear the examinations.
Since 2011, the College has been successfully running the NET/SLET Coaching Programme under the Merged Scheme of UGC XIth and XIIth Plans.
On Saturday, July 23, 2016, a function was held to felicitate the 11 candidates who have cleared their NET/SLET (Chemistry). Principal Dr. Sharmishtha Matkar, Vice Principals Dr. Mangesh NAdkarni and Dr. Arti Sawant, along with the teaching staff of Department of Chemistry, were present on the occasion.

On July 2, 2016, the Patkar College NCC Unit and Municipal High School, Goregaon (W), jointly conducted a plantation drive titled 'Greening of Maharashtra', in the Municipal High School Campus. The A.N.O. of Patkar College NCC Unit, Maj. (Dr.) R. R. Wagh, and the Head Mistress of the School, Mrs. Bharati Yamgar, were present on the occasion. Twenty saplings of Neem, Babhul, Gulmohar, Sitafal, Ranbabu, Nilgiri, and Subabhul were planted by the NCC cadets.
On June 10, 2016, the Department of IT arranged a Project Demo for TY students of the Department. The session aimed to provide students with guidelines for the development of academic projects.

They also shared their experience of developing the applications/websites. They spoke about the various languages, technologies and tools which can be used for developing projects and shared tips on how to prepare for, and face, the final project viva.

On October 15, 2015, the Department of Biotechnology marked the first death anniversary of Dr. Abdul Kalam by holding an intra-departmental student centric program. Titled ‘Tribute to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’, the programme comprised competitions on presentations and essay-writing on the occasion of the UNO-declared Students’ Day. A total of 51 undergraduate students participated in the event.
The topics for the essay competition were ‘India in Dr. Kalam’s Dream’ and ‘Improving Higher Education in India’. Seventeen students participated. The judge was faculty member Dr. Anuradha Mitra.

As part of the event, a documentary on Dr. Kalam’s life, featuring such achievements as launch of the satellite Rohini and being awarded the Padma Vibhushan, was also screened.
With the busy daily routine of the College, one tends to miss out on the simplest yet most beautiful gift of ‘feeling special’.
On September 5, 2015, to revive this positive feeling of ‘being special’, the Department of BMM came up with a new initiative – #MakeAWishPatkar. FY students of the Department, along with faculty member Mr. Freddy Singaraj worked hard to make this possible.
This movement aimed at spreading joy by fulfilling some simple and practical wishes of the College teaching and non-teaching staff (Admin, Lab in-charges, Library staff, Security personnel, Hospitality, Canteen staff etc.) and students through ‘chits and lucky draw’ method. The lucky draw winners had their wishes fulfilled.
The BMM students organised a flash mob especially to spread the message of cheer within the Campus. They also expressed special gratitude towards their teachers for their efforts in shaping young minds and helping them to build a bright future.
The initiative was warmly welcomed by the College. It had aimed to raise good cheer and smiles throughout the Campus. Judging by the happy faces around the Campus, the initiative succeeded.
On August 28, 2015, the Department of IT organised a One-day event for its students, titled ‘TechTalks: Where Everything is Out of the Box’.
In the morning, competitions were held for the students. These included two competitions of scramble code (C++) and scramble code (Java), followed by Web designing and GUI designing. A ‘Watch & Win’ competition for FY students was also held. A total of 64 students participated.
The competitions were followed by the formal inauguration of the event byPrincipal Dr. Sharmistha Matkar, Chief Guest Mr. Sachin Dedhia, and Vice Principal Self-Financed Courses, Dr. Mala Kharkar.
Mr. Dedhia, CEO of Skynet Secure Solutions, spoke on ‘Ethical Hacking’. His talk was very informative. About 200 students attended and they enjoyed the session.
This was followed by a Group Presentation competition by SY students. Their topics dealt with recent and upcoming technologies like Sensor Networks, Google Dart, Python and Sixth Sense. This was followed by a presentation on Unity 5 by TY student Adnan Shaikh.
The last competitions of the day comprised quiz and debate. The prize winners were felicitated by the teachers of the Deparment.

On September 4, 2015, an excursion was arranged for 62 FY students of the Departments of Biotechnology and Microbiology to BNHS, Goregaon, Mumbai. The students were accompanied by four faculty members: Ms. Purva Prabhu, Ms. Saima Shaikh, Ms. Jerina Pinto and Ms. Neha Ahire.
The group were met by resource persons Ms. Amandeep Kaur, Ms. Isha and Ms. Vidhya. The students were divided into 3 groups and taken on a nature trail, where they observed the fauna of the area, and also visited the butterfly garden. This was followed by a lecture on ‘Biodiversity’, which discussed biodiversity in the forests of Mumbai. Students were also imparted the basic skills on how to survive in a forest, and the skills required for research in this field.
On August 28, 2015, the Department of Biotechnology organised a one-day lab visit to the National Facility for Biopharmaceuticals (NFB), G.N.Khalsa College Matunga, Mumbai, for 14 of its M. Sc. Part II students.
At NFB, the students were met by Ms. Pratiksha Alag, In-charge, NFB, and Mr. Avinash Kharat, Research Scholar, NFB, who were also the research persons. After the general welcome by Ms. Alagh, Mr. Kharat gave them information about the instrumentation required for use in the ATC lab. Following this, students were taken to visit four labs at NFB:
The monolayer formation using chick embryo fibroblast and MTT assay practical were also demonstrated in ATC lab.
Students greatly benefited from the visit.
On August 6, 2015, the Department of IT conducted an internship programme, ‘LLP on Global Cricket Community’, for its SY students. The speaker was Mr.Vishal Mali from Swapnil Karekar Creative Solutions.
Mr. Mali provided students with a brief introduction of his company and its organization. He went on to speak about cricket, how it has become globalised and how IT can be incorporated into cricket. He also explained that with wide exposure in fields like software, training, graphic designing, animation, architectural modeling, creative concepts, digital marketing, and web strategy, even the cricket community can use creativity to inspire and empower themselves.
Mr. Mali went on to show students the work done by his company. He also asked students interested in joining the company to email their résumés.
On July 23, 2015, the Department of Microbiology took up an initiative to spread awareness about the spread of the disease ‘Leptospirosis’. SY students of the Department prepared posters giving information about the disease, its causes, symptoms, spread and prevention. The posters were prominently displayed at various locations in the College premises.
The Psychology Association organized its inaugural function for the academic year 2015-2016, on July 29, 2015. The speaker was Dr. Shailesh Tawde, zoologist and assistant professor in the Department of Zoology of the College. He spoke on ‘Animal Behaviour as a Guide to Human Behaviour’.
Dr. Tawde highlighted the similarities between animal and human behaviour, thus justifying research on animal behaviour in Psychology. With the help of appropriate slides, he demonstrated the excellent nurturing, management and social skills exhibited by various animals, birds and fish. Examples were liberally used to explain each behaviour.
The program was well received and greatly appreciated by the audience.
Through the initiative of Hon. Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi, the Indian system of well-being, YOGA, was showcased on a global platform. June 21, 2015, was declared as the first ever International Yoga Day.
Patkar-Varde College celebrated this day under the guidance of Yoga Instructor Mrs. Hemangi Marathe. The session was attended by Principal Dr. S. L. Matkar, Vice Principals, In-charges of NCC, NSS, Sports and Cultural Associations, and faculty members and students of the College. The assembled audience participated enthusiastically in the yoga activities.
In addition, 13 NSS volunteers of the College participated in the Kalina University Sports Camp. Also, 45 NCC cadets of the Boys’ Unit and 26 from the Girls’ Unit joined the Yoga Day celebrations at KES’ Shroff College of Arts and Commerce, while seven cadets from the Girls’ Unit joined the Yoga Day activities at the Garrison Parade Ground, Colaba.
The members of Chikitsak Samuha, the managing body of the College, rendered whole-hearted support for the programme. A poem, penned for the occasion, expressed the importance of yoga in the life of students and teachers
The College has, for the first time, constituted an HRD Committee to enhance the skills- and knowledge-base of its teaching staff.
On April 18, 2015, the Committee organised a guest lecture as part of its Inaugural Function. At this event, Principal Dr. Matkar briefed the audience about the objectives of the HRD committee. Dr. G. V. Pandit, Secretary, Chikitsak Samuha, the governing body of the College, chaired the Inaugural Session, and spoke about the vision behind constituting the HRD committee.
The guest speaker was Mr. Vinay Prabhu, Head, Department of Psychology, Nagindas Khandwala College. He spoke on the topic ‘Fatal Attraction’, which is his term for Escalation of Commitment, the tendency of investing increasing time, money, emotions and efforts in a failed proposition. Using personal and other examples Mr. Prabhu illustrated the fallacy of how one may recognise bad decisions but may fail to reverse them for various reasons such as social pressure, stigma attached to quitters, inability to accept failure, and ego. Most important, Mr. Prabhu stressed that there should be no shame attached to quitting.
The entire teaching staff of the College attended the lecture. They enjoyed it because each one could relate to their own wrong decisions and the difficulty they faced in accepting failure and quitting. After the session was over, some members of the staff privately shared their experiences with Mr. Prabhu.
On March 16, 2015, a one-day visit to Central Institute for Fisheries Education (CIFE), Andheri, Mumbai, was organized by the Department of Biotechnology for M.Sc. Biotechnology (Part I) students for the demonstration of PCR. A total of 14 students were accompanied by a teacher, Ms. Priti Parikh.
CIFE is the premier institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. It is a Deemed University and has contributed immensely to the development of the fisheries sector through its frontline research, teaching and extension activities.
The group was first taken to the Fisheries Resources, Harvest and Post Harvest Division, headed by Dr. Nayak. Arrangements were made in a classroom and one of the scientists from the Division, Dr. Sanath Kumar, delivered a one-hour lecture on PCR and its practical aspects.
The students were then taken to the lab and given a demonstration of PCR. Other major instruments were also shown. Students also visited the Aquatic Environment Management Division and were shown instruments like AAS and DGGE.
Students also got the opportunity to visit the new campus. They were taken to the library and the newly-established aquarium and wet lab facility.
Overall, it was a great experience for the students. It helped them to gain a better understanding of various instruments and the general working of a research lab.
The literary association of the Department of English, S.P.E.L.L., organised several activities for its students during the academic year 2014-15.
Orientation: An Orientation of the TY students was organised by the Department on June 10, 2014. The new batch was acquainted with the Syllabus, methods of teaching-learning and various activities planned for the year by the Department. They were also made aware of the career opportunities that were available to them after their graduation.
Alumni Get-together: On Saturday, July 19, 2014, the Department of English organised a get-together for its alumni. Nearly 30 former students of the Department attended the event.
The event was organised because there was a persistent demand for it from the alumni. As most of them keep in touch with each other and their teachers on an individual basis through emails and chats, they all also wanted to meet each other and relive old times.
The event was organised at Rasoi Banquets, Malad (W). Alumni were received by the current TY students and office bearers of the Department Association. There was a lot of laughter and friendly teasing as alumni reminisced about their College life. They all promised to continue the association with the Department, and to help in any way possible.
Visit to Bookstores & Food Trail: On Sunday, July 20, 2014, the Department of English organised an excursion to student-friendly bookshops in the City, and also a Food Trail, for its TY students, who were accompanied by two teachers, Mrs. Deepti Mujumdar and Dr. Gautami Ambiye.
Students were taken to Strand Book Stall and Kitab Khana, both located at Fort. In both these places, students spent a considerable time happily browsing through the titles available. As both Strand and Kitab Khana offer discounts exceeding 20% on each purchase, students also made several purchases.
As an allied activity, students were also taken on a Food Trail. The group had breakfast at the iconic Irani restaurant Kyani & Co., established in 1904. Students interviewed the manager and also took several pictures of the eatery. Lunch was at Bade Miyan Restaurant at Fort, which was followed by dessert at the New Kulfi Centre at Chowpatty. The final stop was Candies at Bandra, near Lilavati Hospital, where the group had coffee and snacks. The Food Trail was an effort to put students in touch with the traditional culture and food of Mumbai (Persian, Mughlai, and Catholic). This was the first of its kind activity organised by the Department.
Freshers’ Party: In accordance with the Anti-Ragging Regulations issued by the University of Mumbai, a Freshers' Party was organised by the Department of English for its First Year English Literature students on August 2, 2014. The F. Y. students had a gala time, dancing, singing and making merry with their seniors. It was not all fun and games only, however, as the senior students, especially those from the T. Y., spoke to the juniors and shared their experiences in the Department. Students from the previous batch Ms. Nazia Hurzook and Mr. Viral Nandu were also present. They made the new students acquainted with the Department activities.
Fund-Raising & Collection of Stationery Items: The Department of English believes in discharging its social responsibility. In keeping with this spirit, the Department collected stationery worth Rs. 12,000/- as voluntary contribution from students and teachers of the College. The stationery was donated to AngelXpress, an NGO working for the education of under-privileged children. The Department wishes to make this an annual activity.
Guest Lecture & Felicitation: On September 6, 2014, the Department organized a lecture by Dr. Gauri Mahulikar, Head, Department of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai, on ‘Devi: Myth and Symbolism’.
The function began with a traditional ‘gondhal’ by the students of the College. Dr. Mahulikar's lecture was a lucid account of the various myths and symbols associated with the Goddess. Her lecture was followed by an interactive session with the audience, which consisted of staff and students of the College, as well as the teachers and students of Sathaye College, and Ruparel College.
On this occasion, the Department's high-achieving students were also felicitated. Mr. Rohan Menon of T. Y. and Ms. Shaguftaa Sehar of S.Y. were felicitated for scoring the highest marks in English in the year-end examinations of the previous academic year. Ms. Yashashree Sanap and Ms. Neha Mhatre, who made us proud by scoring a distinction in the T. Y. B. A. examination of May 2014, were also felicitated. Two students of the Department, Mr. Viral Nandu and Mr. Sitaram Sable, who completed their graduation battling against all odds, were also honoured.
Screening of films: As part of the syllabus of T. Y. B. A. English Literature (Paper IV), students study Othello, a play by Shakespeare.The BBC adaptation of this play was screened for the students, to enable them to see the play in performance. Also, the students of S.Y.B.A. study Pather Panchali. The film by Satyajit Ray, based on the novel, was screened for them.
Wallpaper: The Wallpaper of the Department, A BIT OF LITT, was continued this year too, with students contributing enthusiastically to it. The students came up with creative ideas and themes for the Wallpaper.
National Seminar: The Department organised a UGC-sponsored two-day National Seminar on “Humour: Texts & Contexts”, on February 6 and 7, 2015.
The Seminar was unique in that it sought to study humour and its applications in an academic setting, an enterprise that has never been attempted in Mumbai before.
Over two days and 11 sessions, an attempt was made to theorise humour and examine its myriad applications in fields as diverse as films, advertising, therapy and business. In addition to paper readings and MS PowerPoint presentations, there was an exploration of the expression of Hasya Rasa through Bharatanatyam (by Ms. Sandhya Damle and her troupe), and a session on the use of puppets to create humour that would cross language barriers (by Ms. Usha Venkatraman).
University Programme: The Departments of English and Sanskrit, University of Mumbai, had arranged a programme on February 26, 2015, titled “Meera & Me”. Internationally-famed singer Ms. Sanjeevani Bhelande spoke about her interpretation of Meera and her divine love for Krishna. She also sang a few songs from her recently released bilingual (Hindi & English) album, “Meera & Me”. This was followed by an interactive session. 14 students from the Department accompanied Mrs. Mujumdar and Dr. Ambiye to this programme.
Awards: Mrs. Deepti Mujumdar, Head, Department of English was awarded “Bharat Gaurav” Award for excellence in teaching by IIFS, New Delhi, in a function held on November 24, 2014, at International Convention Centre, New Delhi.
Mr. Millind Seth (T.Y.B.A.) won Third prize in the Inter-collegiate Book Review competition organised by J.M. Patel College, Goregaon.
Mr. Rohan Menon (T.Y.B.A.) won the Inter-class Chess tournament in the College. He also represented the College at the University level Chess competition. Mr. Rohan also topped S.Y.B.A. class in the year-end examination of the previous year.
Farewell Party: A Farewell Party for the T.Y.B.A. class was organised in the last week of March 2015.
Faculty members of the Department contributed actively in the various administrative duties of the College, attended seminars, conferences and also faculty improvement programmes.
As part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College, a two-day UGC-sponsored National Conference on ‘Foreign Direct Investment in India: Opportunities and Challenges’, was organised on January 31 and February 1, 2014, jointly by the Departments of Economics, Commerce and Accountancy.
The Inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Chief Guest and Keynote speaker Dr. Sudhakar Reddy (Professor of Economics, Osmania University, Hyderabad), Mr. Kishore Rangnekar (President, Chikitsak Samuha), Dr. M. B. Kekare (Principal), Dr. M. S. Nadkarni (Vice-Principal), and Mr. B. B. Suryawanshi (Convenor). The Proceedings of the Conference were also published during the Inauguration ceremony.
In his Keynote Address, Dr. Sudhakar Reddy discussed the various aspects of foreign direct investment (FDI) as also the threats and challenges of allowing FDI indiscriminately into all sectors of the economy. He also spoke about how FDI was affecting Indian industries and employment opportunities.
In the two-day conference, eight technical sessions were held. Each session began with a presentation by the resource person, who also chaired the session, and this was followed by paper-presentations on the sub-theme and interactive sessions.
Research papers had been invited from academicians, researchers, people from corporate sector, and post-graduate students. More than 70 papers were received, which were reviewed by a Review Committee comprising eminent academicians, which selected papers for presentation during the Conference, and also for publication in the Conference Proceedings. The Proceedings, which were published as a document bearing an ISBN number, carried 45 articles.
The Conference was well-appreciated by the participants and I take this opportunity to thank all members of organizing committee and sub-committee, as also all teaching and non-teaching staff members of the College, without whose hard work and co-operation the Conference would have not been successful.
Report on National Conference on Medicinal Botany 7th & 8th September 2007

National Conference on Medicinal Botany was held on 7th & 8th September 2007 by the Department of Botany. The convener of the conference was Principal Dr. U.C. Mashelkar, and the Organizing Secretary was Dr. Madhu K. Kapoor, Head Department of Botany. It was well attended by delegates from all over India. Around 140 delegates were registered for the Conference ( including both local and out station delegates). The Chief guest for the inaugural function was Dr. A.D.Sawant, the Pro-vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. The function was Presided over by Shri. Kishore Ranganekar the President of Chikitsak Samuha. On this occasion a souviner along with abstracts of the research papers was released. The inaugural function was attended by many important dignitaries which included Principal, ex-Principals of various Colleges, Chairperson, Board of Studies of Botany, distinguished Taxonomists, Ecologists etc. The inaugural function was followed by the key note address delivered by Dr. A.D.Sawant, the Pro-vice Chancellor of the university of Mumbai.
There were six Technical sessions including a Poster session.
Indradhanushya is an Inter-University Youth festival of Maharashtra. As 2006-07 was the sesqui-centennial year of the University of Mumbai, the honour of hosting Indradhanushya'06 was bestowed upon it. And as 2006-07 was the Centennial year of Chikitsak Samuha, Patkar-Varde College was given the responsibility of hosting Indradhanushya '06.
Indradhanushya'06 was organized from 4th to 7th November, 2006, in the presence of Honourable Governor of Maharashtra, His-Excellency Shri. S. M. Krishna. Nineteen Universities, 662 participants, 200 officials and about 5000 students were a part of Indradhanushya '06.
Various competitions held over four days and under 5 categories - Music, Dance, Theatre, Literary and Fine Arts - saw the participants competing for glory. Three thousand students from various Colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai participated in a rally in Goregaon, organised by the NSS unit of the University of Mumbai. This rally was organised on 5th November 2007. A Cultural Procession and a Mini-marathon were also organised on the same day.
The main sponsor was Intelenet who contributed a sum of Rs. 20,00,000/-. Hence, this cultural event was called "Intelenet Indradhanushya'06". MDACS, the Mumbai District Aids Control Society also contributed 800 sleeping bags and 1000 shirts for the participants.
Dr. Vijay Khole Hon. Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai inaugurated the function. Also present were noted film actor Shri. Shivaji Satam, Chairperson - Organising Committee Indradhanushya Shri. Vinayak Dalvie, Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai Dr. A. D. Sawant, President Chikitsak Samuha Shri. Kishore Rangnekar, Shri. Sandeep Agarwal of Intelenet, Cultural Director A.I.U. Shri. Sampson David, Director, MDACS Dr. Nirupa Borges, and Principal - Patkar-Varde College Dr. Uday Mashelkar. Directors of Students' Welfare (DSW's) of nineteen Universities were felicitated.
At the Valedictory function, the Chief Guests were His Excellency Governor of Maharashtra Shri. S. M. Krishna, Hon. Chief Minister Shri. Vilasrao Deshmukh, Member of Planning Commission Dr. Bhalchandra Mungekar, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Protocol Shri. Anees Ahmed, Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai Dr. Vijay Khole and Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai Dr. A. D. Sawant.
Shri. Sudesh Bhosle, Ms. Vaishali Samant, Shri. Sairam Iyer and Shri Navin Prabhakar performed at the Valedictory function. There were also performances by Uday Deshpande and his group (Samarth Vyayam Mandal) and students of Blind School and also Folk dances by Lok-Kala Academy. The programme was compered by Shri. Adesh Bandekar and his group. The event was followed by excellent fire works by Moranis.
In addition to three prizes in each event, the following awards were given on the basis of overall performance:
1) Golden Girl Award
2) Golden Boy Award
The Runner-up Trophy was won by SNDT Women's University. The Overall Championship Trophy was won by the University of Mumbai.
This mega-event was extensively covered by local newspapers such as Loksatta, Lokmat, and Maharashtra Times. The T.V. channel Sahara Samay covered the event live and parts of it were also telecast on Doordarshan. Wide publicity was also given on All India Radio and Radio Mirchi.
History Association
42nd Annual Conference of The Institute of Historical Studies held at our College from 30.11.2005 to 02.12.2005 This academic year, the History Association of our College, hosted the 42 nd Annual Session of the National Conference of Institute of Historical Studies. The all India theme of the conference was "Business Communities in India " and the local theme was "Migration in Maharashtra : Its Impact and Challenges". About 90 delegates from various states of India registered for the conference out of which about 72 delegates attended the conference. Totally 27 papers were read on both the themes. The inauguration of the conference was done on the morning of the 30 th of November. Dr. U.C. Mashelkar, Principal of the College, welcomed the delegates, this was followed by Shri. Kishor Rangnekar, President of the Chikitsak Samuha, giving the brief history of the College. Dr. G.V. Pandit was a guest in the dais. The Director of the IHS, Dr. Sukumar Bhattacharyya gave his introductory remarks and the local secretary of the conference Dr. (Smt) Usha R. Vijailakshmi talked about the aims and objectives of the conference. The chief Guest for the inauguration was Dr. A. D. Sawant, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai . He released a souvenir entitled "Sarupa" on this occasion. |
